About Spaceducators
We are a small operation built around one bet: that most tutoring fails not because the tutor is weak, but because the match is wrong.
Our mission
Nobody disputes that one-to-one teaching works. The awkward part is that it has always been rationed by price, which turns an ordinary teaching method into a marker of who could afford one.
We want individual attention to be unremarkable. That means matching honestly rather than filling slots, publishing what an hour costs, and hiring people who know a subject deeply enough to explain it three ways when the first two don't land.
Our story
The company began in 2018 as a handful of graduate students teaching evenings and weekends. Demand outran the roster almost immediately, which forced the question we have been answering ever since: how do you add tutors without quietly lowering the bar?
Our answer has been to keep the bar where it is and grow more slowly than we could. More than 10,000 students later, we still turn down the large majority of people who apply to teach here.
Our values
Student-centred learning
The hour starts from what the student can already do, not from where the syllabus says they should be.
Academic excellence
We hire for subject depth first. Teaching craft can be trained; genuine command of the material cannot be faked.
Integrity first
We provide learning assistance only. Students complete their own work.
Goal-oriented results
Every engagement opens with a written goal, and gets measured against that goal rather than against effort.
Leadership team
Dr. Emily Richardson
Founder & CEO
Nine years teaching undergraduate mathematics before starting the company. Keeps two students a term so the product stays honest.
Marcus Johnson
Head of Tutor Development
Owns the screening process and runs every teaching demonstration personally. Previously ran a secondary school department.
Dr. Sarah Chen
Director of STEM Programs
Responsible for the maths and science rosters and for the diagnostics that decide who gets matched with whom.
James Williams
Head of Test Prep
Built the SAT and ACT curriculum around timing before content, which is the opposite of how most courses are ordered.
Our tutor screening process
About one applicant in twenty reaches a first session. Six stages stand in the way, and the teaching demonstration removes more people than any of the others.
Screening steps
- Application and credential review — degrees and transcripts confirmed directly with the awarding institution, not taken on trust.
- Subject-matter assessment — a written paper set one level above whatever the applicant intends to teach.
- Teaching demonstration — a live session with a member of our team playing a student who is stuck and slightly discouraged.
- Background check — criminal record screening through an accredited provider, repeated periodically.
- Reference verification — two professional references, contacted by phone rather than by form.
- Ongoing performance monitoring — session ratings and written student feedback reviewed every term, with follow-up where the trend slips.
Our educational philosophy
Watching someone else solve a problem feels productive and mostly isn't. Our tutors are trained to keep the student doing the work: attempting first, narrating the reasoning aloud, and being asked why rather than told what.
It makes the first session slower than a lecture would be. By the fifth it is considerably faster, because the student has stopped waiting to be shown.

Tell us the subject and the level, and we'll come back with two or three tutors who have taught it before.
